Shaping SMU Newsletter | President's Memo

Published on

As we step into 2019, our nation and world continue to grapple with challenges of increasing complexity. That’s what makes our work at SMU more important than ever.

And that's why Shaping SMU is full of good news – stories of Mustangs at their best and the unique attributes that set our ponies apart from the rest of the herd.

Research with Impact

In this issue, we explore one of our key areas of focus – the intersection of research with teaching, technology and business in our unique, can-do liberal arts environment. You’ll catch a glimpse of the mind-bending work of physicist Jodi Cooley, who is decoding the intricacies of dark matter to unlock the fundamental questions of the universe and our very existence.

And, you’ll learn about our exciting groundbreaking this month for the Gerald J. Ford Research and Innovation Building. It’s a multidisciplinary, data-driven nerve center, where faculty, students and business leaders will find the space to think big, collaborate and share uncontainable ideas that lead to real-world solutions.

Research with impact – it’s putting SMU on a whole new map. As I often say, what we’ve done is great, but what gets me up in the morning is what we are going to do. In my nearly 25 years as president, I have never been more optimistic about the future of SMU.

Together, we are moving the world forward. Thank you for your dedication to shaping world changers.

R. Gerald Turner, President
